Proof Gold Libertad Coins were first issued by the Mexican Mint in 1989. This release came seven years after the first issue of BU Gold Libertad Coins. However, it was a one-year issue. The next gold coin would not be released until 2004 when these 1/4 oz Proof Gold Libertad were released by the mint. The Mexican Mint started striking all five weights on an annual basis in 2005, giving the series the status of an annual release. The 2021 issue of this series will have the second-lowest mintage in its history with only 450 coins being produced in this weight. The lowest total ever is still 250 coins, which was first achieved in 2014 and was matched in 2020. A depiction of Winged Victory can be found on the obverse of 2021 1/4 oz Proof Gold Libertad Coins. The Centenario design, which was first used on a 50 Peso gold coin in Mexico in 1921, was resurrected in 1981 for the Gold Libertad Series and updated with this graphic feature in 2000. On 2021 Proof, reverse imagery The national coat of arms is printed on Mexican Libertad Coins. The prickly pear cactus on the Mexican seal has a golden eagle sitting on it. An oak-and-laurel wreath surrounds the design element, which depicts an eagle slaying a serpent. These 2021 1/4 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coins are available as cameo proofs with individual plastic capsules. The proof visuals include frosted designs and mirrored fields.
