Mints are places where legal tender coins, bullion bars, rounds, and collector coins are produced. Government-owned and privately controlled mints both produce coins, bullion, and other kinds of metals, and have done so for some time. The earliest metal-based money did not take the shape of coins, but rather was in the form of simple metal objects, such as rings or decorations. Metals were formerly, as they are now, a representation of sturdiness and durability. Due to their rarity, durability, and ease of exchange, precious metals have also gained popularity as a symbol of riches. Today, physical metals are also widely used as a kind of investing.
