 Ducat Coins
More than 400 years ago, Austria produced the first Ducat. Though the majority of the modern 1-ducat coins were produced recently, they all share the same heritage. The coins not only provide true historical interest but are also a very cheap method to purchase gold in “fractional” sizes. Emperor Franz Joseph I, who ruled over parts of Central and Eastern Europe from 1848 to 1916, is depicted on the bust of today’s Austrian 1 Ducat coins. Over the double-headed imperial eagle on the reverse is the Austrian Coat of Arms. Many Austrian 1 Ducat coins have the date 1915, the last year the coin was made available for commerce and the year before Franz Joseph I passed away. Gold Ducats from 1915 are restrikes. Between 1920 and 1936, over 1 million of the coins were produced. Even now, the Austrian Mint still produces legitimate restrikes of the 1 Ducat. Dutch Knights is another name for Dutch 1 Ducat coins. They show an armored warrior holding an arrow and sword in each hand.
