Proof Gold Libertad Coins were first issued by the Mexican Mint in 1989. This release came seven years after the first issue of BU Gold Libertad Coins. However, it was a one-year issue. The next gold coin would not be released until 2004 when these 1/4 oz Proof Gold Libertad were released by the mint. The Centenario design, which was first used on a 50 Peso gold coin in Mexico in 1921, was resurrected in 1981 for the Gold Libertad Series and updated with this graphic feature in 2000. On 2021 Proof, reverse imagery The national coat of arms is printed on Mexican Libertad Coins. The prickly pear cactus on the Mexican seal has a golden eagle sitting on it. An oak-and-laurel wreath surrounds the design element, which depicts an eagle slaying a serpent.
