The Design

As Australia is a nation of the British Commonwealth, this sovereign coin’s obverse depicts the former Queen Elizabeth II. Jody Clark is the artist who signs the portrait, which showcases the Queen with her famous George IV State Crown. Besides Her Majesty’s and the country’s name, the coin’s face value is on the bottom rim with : “1 DOLLAR.” The reverse features a hopping Kangaroo. The animal is a native marsupial, and the design is based on Stuart Devlin’s original idea for the Australian Copper Penny. The coin’s name arches over the kangaroo depiction, while weight, metal content, fineness, and year of issuance are beneath it. A discreet “P” is on the right, standing for the Perth Mint mintmark.
